Bombers Away

We broke a story at InsideDefense.com yesterday that you'll be hearing more about soon. It's now up on Military.com:

bombers.jpg

The Air Force is proposing a $5 billion down payment for a next-generation long-range strike aircraft, money the service hopes will propel research and development needed to meet the Pentagon’s goal of fielding a new bomber fleet by 2018, according to sources familiar with new Air Force investment plans.

This robust commitment -- detailed in the Air Force’s proposed six-year spending plan, which was submitted to the Office of the Secretary of Defense earlier this month -- would accelerate bomber modernization by two decades in a bid to augment the effectiveness of U.S. air power in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The purpose of this initially is to do some studies, design trade-offs as well as research and development,” a source familiar with the Air Force’s new bomber plans.

For the official Air Force word on future bombers, try this.

. . . . And with that, I'm out. It's been fun. Thanks to Noah for another opportunity to sit in the guest editor's chair.

One shameless plug before I sign off: Go see this band. They're terrific. I'll be at their New York show Monday night.

Welcome back, Noah. And congrats, again.

THIS IS A MILITARY SITE...If I wanted to learn about crappy bands, I'd find that info elsewhere.

I'm not about to drive from my apartment (no, my mother doesn't own the apartment complex) across half of the US just to see some random band in NYC.

As good as the new bombers might be ill miss the BUFF.

I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the entries will look very much like the dear departed Sonic Cruiser. Tilt the horizontal stabalizers, spray on some absorbing coating, kick the top speed up to Mach 1.2, and POW! Instant next-generation bomber.

Not Really

Want to bet This new Bomber will be invisable to radar, fly at supersonic speed, have a ten thousand mile range and in the end it will be another Billion dollar a copy Hanger queen?

What's a hanger queen? That is what they call the B-2. For every hour in the air it needs 12 hours in the hanger to make repairs. The B-1 better at one to ten. It's the Big ugly fat fucker that seems to be ready to go with the lest down time.

In twenty years with new engines and by generating it's own charged plasma fields. The ancient B-52 will invisable to the naked eye as well as to radar and droping 70, thousand pounds of weapons on some ones head.

You know what they say in the air force, "When the last B-1 and B-2 are flown to the bone yard in the desert. The crews will be picked up by a B-52!" Now you can add this new B-3 to all the new wonder Bomber's the old Buff will fly into retirement!

/quote BTW, this is a military site...I could care less about some crappy band in another state.

Murc, get out of your mother's basement and get a life. There is more to life than dreaming about military theory.
