War Funds: Bush Disses Hill?

“Congress said it wants next year’s defense budget to include funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,” intead of using a series of so-called “supplemental,” emergency requests for cash, Defense News is reporting. But President Bush “has indicated he may ignore that request.”

In a “signing statement” released when he signed the 2007 Defense Authorization Act on Oct. 17, the president listed two dozen provisions in the act that he indicated he may or may not abide by…

Among the provisions is Section 1008 of the Authorization Act, which requires the president to submit defense budgets for 2008 and beyond that include funding for the wars and contain “a detailed justification of the funds requested.”

The Bush administration has frequently ignored requirements that it does not like by proclaiming exclusions from the law in signing statements, which are written statements about how the president plans to interpret the law. Since he became president, Bush has issued statements carving out exceptions to more than 750 laws — a rate far higher than any previous president.

In times like these when America’s survival depends on the proper leadership skills, I say
thank Mr. Bush for his tenacity in knowing what
the situtation requires and not by out guessing
    a bunch of political hacks.

Right or wrong, my country and if you don’s like it
    leave, now.

Charlie my boy, think again. If the Pres. doesn’t have to obey the law, who does? The whole idea of separate powers is that each reinforces the others’ responsibilities. It’s not working right now, and no amount of “love it or leave it” will fix it. Love it and get to work might be a better approach. He’s just another guy, and when he’s wrong, as this one is, it’s up to the rest of us to set him, and us, on the straight again.

  5. Tanksoldier says:

Charlie, respectfully…blind faith in bad leadership in not patriotism. I wish more people would see that. Bush has been a catastrophe for this country. I voted for him, twice—and I have come to rue the day. He is destroying our status in the world, he is alienating those who would support us. Do you realize he forfieted the war on terror (Afghanistan) to fight for big oil in Iraq. Iraq has nothing to do with the war on terror, and him going there cost us dearly…In the lives of our soldiers, and in national treasure. This country borrows 2 billion dollars a day. Is that what you voted for? Do you realized Bush is creating terrorist that our kids will have to fight? I used to feel the same way you do. It is so short-sighted. Are you ever going to be rich? I am not. It has become increasingly clear to me that you can only support republicans and republican candidates if you are rich, because that is solely who they work for. Big corporations, big oil, big pharma, the super rich, etc. This country is not a democracy. It is an oligarchy, ruled by the super wealthy. Do you realize how many millionaires there are in congress? Geez….Bush is an oil man, and yet under him, gas prices are the highest they have ever been. Do you think that is a coincidence? Seriously? He is inarticulate, and if you have been paying attetion, he has spouted the same rhetortic, by rote, for the last 5 years, even though conditions changed on the ground every single day. Condoleeza Rice is a silly little girl, Rumsfeld is a war Criminal. Are you a neo-con? Personally I am not. Do you know what a neo-con is? These people are neo-cons. I promise you that what they want is not what you espouse. Bush has done more damage to ths country that anyone in the last 200 years. If you have an open mind, I’ll send you info. But most Americans are brainwashed. Like I was for 39—39!!!! years! If you are not appalled by his administration, you are not paying attention. This, from someone who voted for him. TWICE!!! I am beside myself. If I could find a bumper sticker that said “Blame me—I voted for him—twice!!!” I would put it on my truck. Bush has been an embarrassment and a disappointment. I am more disappointed in him than you will ever be, because I believed in him once. You have heard the phrase “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned?” Screw that. Try an American citizen scorned. Furious does not begin to describe it. Yeah, and I am a former M1Tanker, 1st Cav. 91-94. Tell me, what part of “Mission Accomplished” do the indsurgents not understand?! Wake up.

someone explain to me why over 2700 young men and women are dead, from everything I gather we are not suppose to be there, our commander and chief, is screwed up. he needs to listen to his generals, not fire them or make them step down, maybe that whole top bunch should head back to texas.

  7. James Vetzel says:

It’s kill them there or kill them here. The choice is yours for the time being. The “perfect storm” is coming my children and you have been warned. They don’t want your money, your land, your family, not even a hug. They want you dead, plain and simple and they have even admitted this. My advice to all is be prepared, because “The excrement is going to impact the ocillator” soon and it ain’t going to be pretty for the Liberals or the Conservatives

  8. Marcus says:

I served my Country, OUR COUNTRY, for 10 years, watched both wars from the front and know what the truth is… regardless, reality is we, as Americans are lied to daily, from the goverment, press, and people with their scheming, searching for a story to tell they do not know anything about. Reality is hard, and if you want to beleive it, prove it. Go there and look at the real material found in Iraq, see what I have seen and tell me you trust Bush. I do not, I did, as well as freinds… they are not here anymore, but the lies remain, and my trust is broken. God Bless America, and hope he helps us soon, we need it.

  9. Natrie Ann says:

Until we bring the jobs back from CHINA, they will suck up the worlds oil .My son and all of America’s son’s will be sent to fight for oil for the spoiled people of America. All the private plane owners of America, OPRAH, JOHN TRAVOLTA, TRUMP, and the rest of you send your own children or yourselves!!!My son has paid the price for your greed.Don’t just blame BUSH. You are all sucking up oil without concern for the earth or your fellow man.Get real America you are fat spoiled children. Now you blame Daddy BUSH and not yourselves.

  10. James Vetzel says:

We are at War wether you like it or not. War was declared on us right after Yalta with Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin in attendance. We started it there and with any luck we’ll finish it there. I served over 21 years for my Country (64-86). People die in wars. 77,000 of my fellow Americans died in ten years and we accomplished nothing because we “Cut and Run”. 2,700 dead in <5 years, thats a bargain. Don’t forget, there is no draft, we were all volunteers and don’t say that they are all lower economic strata men because I know better-I was there. And get off the “I Hate Bush” campaign. He’s better that anything else that was offered at the time. I lived with 10 different Presidents, Truman to Bush 2 and the only two that were worth a dime were Truman and Reagan. So shut up and get on with your life. You’ll get your chance to screw up the Country when the Political Pedulum swings back your way and then it’ll be our turn to whine.

  11. Jon says:

Everyone wants to hate bush because the easy thing to do is blame and point fingers. People are forgetting that terrorists do not fight by “rules” and they certainly have no system of “checks and balances”. So it may look like bush flexes the rules but thats what it takes to fight this kind of enemy in my opinion. The real problem is that there is no since of national unity any more, everyone watches out just for themselves and says screw the country. We have been lulled into laziness and false security. I laugh at liberals because they think the world is some kind of disneyland and truth is it’s far from it. We think we are so badass that no one would dare mess with us, well guess what THEY DID AND WILL AGAIN IF THEY GET THE CHANCE.

  12. Robert Lane says:

It is both amusing and sickening to hear some bitter old lifer regurgitate the asinine and irrelevant catch phrases that come from the inept politicians that they admire. “kill them there or kill them here”, “Cut and run”? I’m suprised I haven’t heard “kill them all, let God sort them out” or “Ours’ is not to question why, ours is but to do or die”. You should try to have an original thought.
On the other side of stupidity is the admonition by some people who tell others to “send there children”(to war). When I joined the Air Force in 1967, I TOOK THE OATH, Not mommy or daddy. Anybody who joins the military because mommy or daddy tells them to is an idiot and no asset to the military. Nobody sends anybody else you make that choice on your own.

  13. Natrie Ann says:

Of course no one joins because thier parents tell them to. My son is one of the Few , The Proud,He is a MARINE.It would be nice if those who use the most, would consider what they are doing to this earth, and remember those who fight and die for the life style they so enjoy. My son took the OATH also. I will forever be proud of him. However Iam not proud of the lazy , greedy Americans that consume, but never give back,or teach thier children that there is honor in serving. You can not have cheap goods from CHINA, and cheap gas too. Wake up , there is no FREE lunch!!!So you can buy $9.99 sandals at Old Navy, wow maybe even 3 pairs. Fill your closets with junk from CHINA.I watch those container ships come in day after day, loaded with junk.Stupid Americans go crazy for the prices at Wal-Mart , Target,etc.. CHINA is sucking up the worlds oil as you shop, and guess who’s going to pay for more for thier gasoline ,or be sending thier son’s to fight and die for it.You are all to blame. WAKE up about CHINA before it is too late!

  14. Natrie Ann says:

You cry that you are being lied to. How’s this for the TRUTH. The people in this country want oil,so our goverment will make up reason’s to go to war in countries that have OIL! Then , you won’t have to cry at the gas pump.

  15. Dennis Thompson says:

Throw away the rule books, lets get down to business instead of using politics use common judgement and let the soldiers loose to do their jobs they were trained to do instead of puting limitations on operations, just kick ass and get home.

  16. Stephen, Greenville, Pa. says:

Everybody has to follow the chain of command. In the president’s case, the chain of command above him is the United States Constitution. At a minimum, he’s playing fast and loose with it.

Can you imagine the consequences had you ever decided you had the right to selectively interpret or choose not to carry out your commander’s orders?

A good leader leads by example.

  17. Once a soldier says:

What follows are my thoughts and they are not tied to gether, please ecuse this. TO Marcus and tanksoldier, I agree with you both, fortunately I did not vote for bush. To everyone who says love it or leave it you are brain washed because you don’t see the reality that our country was created to allow for dissent. It is patriotic to speak your mind and many have died for this. As a German friend said.. “that’s exactly how Hitler came to power..it was all legal” Hearing that is scary. We never did belong in Iraq, sadly we are there. We should have kept our focus on Afganistan and kept our word there instead of taking out the bully in Iraq. We are not here to police other countries. Otherwise we would have taken on China along time ago. Our government’s job is to keep us as safe as possible while protecting our freedom and privacy.

  18. JDW says:

Has anyone stopped to think about the ’strategery’ involved in all the ‘war on terror’? WE WERE ATTACKED – it scared us. Any animal feeling cornered (even the big ones) lash out against their perceived threats. We did just that – we first took care of the obvious one (Afghanistan – homebase for al-Qaeda)and then rolled into the next one that looked obvious, Iraq. We took too long getting there though. Saddam had lost a lot of his WMD capability by 2001, and the 1.5 years warning we gave him was enough time to hide / remove the WMDs he had left over. IF Iraq had been found with large amounts of WMDs in its borders, we would be rolling on Iran & Syria now as well. Iraq was probably going to be our ‘beach-head’ of sorts in the region. It still may just be that. The Syrians and Iranians realize this and have invested massive amounts into the insurgency in Iraq. By making us look like we are failing to secure the peace, or even looking worse (looking like ‘oppressors’ – of course we are really oppressing them with schools, hospitals, and democratic foundations), they are able to use the insurgency to sway opinions here at home as well as in the rest of the ‘free’-world. It’s human nature to want to see the underdog / victim to win; the world was 100% behind us on September 12th. With that said we should’ve rolled on Iran then Afghanistan and Iraq. We had the initiative on September 12th! We nearly had a ‘blind-eye / carte-blanche’ ticket to erasing a few of the piss-ant countries that have needled at us for the last 20-30 years. If you want to dig a little deeper, let’s look into history – the Muslims have made more incursions into western society than western society has into them. Muslims took Palestine in the 7th / 8th centuries from CHRISTIANS; Muslims rolled into Spain and France in the 8th / 9th centuries; popes called the crusades (11th – 14th centuries), but due to our fractious European ancestors, they lost site of the strategic import of the crusades and only saw the personal gains to be made in crusading. Shortly after the crusades ended, Muslims again were beating on the doors of Eastern Europe and thankfully were kept in check by a few tough German mercenaries in Austria, as well as in-fighting amongst Muslim nations. Now, we see the potential for Islam yet again to rule OUR homelands in Europe. Don’t buy want I’m saying? Look at the rate at which Muslim communities are growing in Europe versus the plateau / decline of ‘European’ birth-rates. Apologists & revisionists will say “Christians raided, oppressed and killed in the name of God – who are we to tell them they can’t do the same?” That kind of mentality is mind-boggling to say the least. The very liberal democracies we adhere to found their roots in Judeo-Christian ethics. Christianity teaches to love, forgive, heal. Islam teaches to punish, avenge, suppress. Why can’t our society get it? Are our people so lazy they won’t look at a book or read a few paragraphs off the internet to be reminded of the history that shape sour future?

In the long run, it’s going to boil down to this – whose side are you on? The people we are fighting are from countries where women are oppresed (more than we do here), if you were gay, you could be killed for it (regularly, not just randomly in Wyoming by drunk rednecks), and of course you couldn’t worship God in your way without having to pay a ‘tax’ (‘Jizziyah’ – look it up) to pray your way. Doubt my word? Look into recent events in Holland…
